Dark-winged fungus gnat (probable)

Moist soil, decaying plant material, compost, and indoor plant potting mix. Adults commonly appear near houseplants and windows.

Larvae feed mainly on fungi, algae, and decaying organic matter; some damage fine plant roots. Adults usually consume little or nothing and may take moisture or nectar.

Adults are weak fliers and often walk or hover near damp soil. Females lay eggs in moist organic substrates, where larvae develop before pupating.

Generally harmless to people and pets, though larvae can weaken seedlings and houseplants when abundant. They contribute to decomposition and nutrient cycling.
