Fruit fly

Found worldwide in association with human habitats, particularly near fermenting organic matter, kitchens, and orchards.

They feed on yeast and other microorganisms found on decaying fruits and vegetables.

They have a very fast life cycle (about 8-10 days at room temperature) and are highly attracted to the smell of fermentation. They are most active during the day.

They are considered a nuisance pest in homes and can potentially transfer bacteria to food. However, they are invaluable to science as one of the most studied model organisms in genetics and biology.
