Unidentified dark beetle (likely a ground beetle)

Usually found under leaf litter, bark, stones, moss, and garden debris. The photographed individual appears on a dry, fibrous plant surface.

Adults commonly prey on small insects, larvae, slugs, snails, and other invertebrates; some species also eat seeds or plant matter.

Generally nocturnal and fast-moving, hiding by day in sheltered ground cover. Many overwinter as adults and provide substantial natural pest control.

Typically harmless to people, pets, homes, and plants; they do not sting or infest stored food. Beneficial species consume garden pests, though some can release an irritating defensive odor or secretion when handled.
