Found in almost every terrestrial habitat worldwide, nesting in soil, wood, or within human structures.

Omnivorous; they consume nectar, seeds, fungus, and other insects. Many species are scavengers of human or pet food.

Eusocial insects living in structured colonies with specialized roles (queens, drones, workers). They communicate via pheromone trails.

Benefits: Soil aeration and seed dispersal. Risks: Can become indoor pests, damage structures (carpenter ants), or cause painful stings (fire ants).
