Adults consume nectar and collect pollen; larvae are provisioned with pollen and nectar. They are important pollinators.

Usually solitary, though several females may nest near one another. Females excavate tunnels in dead wood; males may hover defensively but generally cannot sting.

Females can sting if handled, while males are harmless. Carpenter bees pollinate many plants, though nesting tunnels can damage exposed structural wood over time.
