Water boatman (likely)

Freshwater ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving streams; commonly among submerged vegetation or bottom sediment.

Most species collect algae, detritus, and microorganisms from sediment with their front legs; a few are predatory.

Strong swimmers using flattened hind legs; adults may fly between water bodies and are often attracted to lights. Eggs are laid on submerged surfaces, with aquatic nymphs developing through several molts.

Generally harmless to people and beneficial as aquatic food-web members and occasional algae consumers. They may be confused with predatory backswimmers, which can bite painfully.
