Ground beetle

Ground beetles live under stones, leaf litter, logs, mulch, and around garden or shoreline vegetation. This individual may be near water accidentally or using the dock as shelter.

Mostly predatory, eating caterpillars, beetle larvae, slugs, snails, and other small invertebrates; some species also consume seeds or plant matter.

Usually nocturnal and fast-moving, hiding during daylight. Most do not fly often, though many species can; adults overwinter in soil or protected crevices and reproduce seasonally.

Generally harmless to people and do not infest homes or stored food. They are beneficial predators that help control garden pests; some species can release defensive odors or secretions if handled.
