Red spider mite (likely clover mite)

Common on grasses, clover, lawn edges, gardens, and sunny building surfaces; adults may enter homes or collect on outdoor fabrics. The pictured pale, featherlike material is likely incidental substrate.

Pierces plant cells and sucks sap, especially from grasses and clover. Heavy infestations can cause stippling, bronzing, or plant stress.

Usually active in cool seasons and during daylight, often clustering in sheltered spots; populations may surge in spring or autumn. They reproduce rapidly, and crushed individuals can leave reddish stains.

Not harmful to people, pets, or stored products, and they do not bite; indoor infestations are mainly a nuisance. They can stress turf and ornamentals but also form part of the food web for predatory mites and small arthropods.
