Phorid Fly (Scuttle Fly)

Moist decaying organic matter, drains, compost bins, soil of potted plants, sewage pipes, and trash cans indoors and outdoors.

Larvae feed on decomposing plant and animal matter, fungi, sewage sludge, and organic debris in drains. Adults feed on liquids, nectar, and honeydew.

Characterized by a erratic 'scuttling' running behavior across surfaces instead of immediately taking flight when disturbed. They have a distinctly humped back profile and strong hind legs.

Risks: Considered persistent indoor pests as they can spread bacteria and pathogens from sewage/decaying matter onto food surfaces. Benefits: Important decomposers in natural ecosystems that help break down organic waste.
