Backswimmer

Ponds, pools, slow-moving streams, and lakes rich in vegetation.

Carnivorous; feeds on aquatic insects, tadpoles, small fish, and invertebrates using piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Swims upside-down beneath the surface of the water using long hind legs like oars. Traps air bubbles beneath its abdomen to breathe underwater.

Benefits the ecosystem by controlling mosquito larvae and aquatic pests. Can deliver a painful, bee-like sting to humans if handled carelessly.
