Found worldwide, especially near ripening or fermenting fruit and vegetables

Mainly feed on yeast and the organic matter of overripe or rotting produce

Rapid life cycle (8-10 days); they are most active during the day and are highly attracted to the smell of fermentation

Generally harmless to humans but can contaminate food with bacteria; highly beneficial as a model organism in genetic and scientific research
