Monarch Butterfly (Chrysalis stage)

Found in a variety of habitats including fields, meadows, gardens, and along roadsides, wherever milkweed plants are present.

In the chrysalis stage, they do not eat. As caterpillars, they feed exclusively on milkweed. As adult butterflies, they consume nectar from a variety of flowering plants.

The caterpillar attaches itself to a secure surface, hangs in a J-shape, and sheds its skin to reveal the chrysalis. Inside, it undergoes metamorphosis over 9 to 14 days before emerging as a butterfly.

Monarchs are beneficial pollinators. They pose no direct risk to humans. Their caterpillars absorb toxins from milkweed, making them and the adults distasteful and toxic to many predators.
