Decaying wood, under bark, leaf litter, soil, vegetation, and occasionally indoor areas when attracted to lights

Larvae (wireworms) feed on decaying plant material, roots, or small soft-bodied insects. Adults feed on nectar, plant sap, pollen, or small soft insects.

Known for their unique clicking mechanism that allows them to snap a spine on their thorax against a groove, flipping themselves into the air to right themselves when on their back or to escape predators. They are mostly nocturnal and attracted to artificial light sources.

Harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. In ecosystems, adults act as mild pollinators and decomposers, though wireworm larvae can sometimes damage garden plant roots.
