Common around homes, garbage, carrion, animal waste, and flowering plants worldwide.

Adults feed on liquids from carrion, feces, refuse, nectar, and other decaying organic matter. Larvae typically consume decomposing animal tissue or waste.

Adults are strong, fast fliers attracted to odors and warmth; females lay eggs on carrion or organic waste, and larvae develop through several molts before pupating.

They can mechanically transfer pathogens and contaminate food, though typical household exposure is low. They recycle nutrients and serve as important food for birds, spiders, and other predators.
