Lubber grasshopper

Shrubby vegetation, gardens, fields, and other open habitats in the southeastern United States.

Chews leaves and flowers of many plants, including weeds and garden crops.

A large, flightless grasshopper; often slow-moving and conspicuously colored. Females lay eggs in soil, where they overwinter before hatching.

May damage ornamental plants and crops when abundant. Its warning colors and chemical defenses discourage predators; it is not dangerous to people.
