Woolly Bear Caterpillar

Found in temperate regions across North America, inhabiting fields, meadows, and gardens under logs or leaf litter.

Polyphagous herbivores feeding on low-growing herbaceous plants including dandelion, clover, and various grasses.

Rolls into a tight defensive ball when threatened. Overwinters as a caterpillar under debris, freezing solid before resuming activity in spring.

Harmless to handle, though bristles may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Serves as an important food source for birds and small mammals.
