Booklouse (barklouse)

Warm, humid indoor locations, especially books, paper, cardboard, stored foods, and areas with mold or dampness.

Feeds mainly on microscopic mold, fungi, algae, and organic residues on paper or other stored materials; it does not bite humans.

Moves slowly or in short bursts and favors darkness, moisture, and undisturbed surfaces. Populations can increase rapidly by parthenogenesis when humidity is high.

Harmless to people, pets, and buildings, though large numbers indicate excess moisture and may contaminate or damage paper goods. It contributes modestly to decomposition by consuming fungi and organic debris.
