Small Eyed Sphinx Moth

Deciduous and mixed woodlands, forests, and suburban areas near host plants.

Adults do not feed as they lack functional mouthparts and survive on stored energy from the caterpillar stage; caterpillars feed on the foliage of host trees such as cherry, plum, apple, and birch.

Nocturnal adults are attracted to lights and often rest on tree trunks or walls during the day; when disturbed, they reveal blue eyespots on their hindwings to startle predators.

Completely harmless to humans as they do not bite, sting, or possess venom; caterpillars can occasionally cause minor defoliation on fruit trees but rarely reach pest levels.
