Praying Mantis (Giant Shield Mantis / Leaf Mantis)

Tropical rainforests, woodlands, dense foliage, and gardens across Southeast Asia and tropical regions

Carnivorous; feeds on live insects such as crickets, flies, moths, caterpillars, and occasionally small vertebrates

Solitary ambush predator that relies on camouflage mimicking green leaves to blend into surrounding foliage. Uses raptorial forelegs to rapidly strike and capture prey. Undergoes incomplete metamorphosis with egg, nymph, and adult stages.

Harmless and non-venomous to humans, though large specimens can give a small pinch with raptorial legs if handled roughly. Highly beneficial pest control agent in ecosystems and gardens as a generalist predator.
