Puss Caterpillar

Forests, woodlands, and urban areas with shade trees such as oak, elm, and citrus

Leaves of various shade trees and shrubs, particularly oak and elm

Solitary caterpillars that feed on foliage; when disturbed, they curl up or remain motionless. They spin a tough, oval cocoon in the fall to pupate into the Southern Flannel Moth.

High risk: It is considered the most venomous caterpillar in North America. The long, hair-like setae conceal toxic spines that can cause severe pain, swelling, burning, nausea, and headaches upon contact.
