Mosquito bite (likely)

Mosquitoes occur near standing water, vegetation, homes, and other humid environments worldwide.

Only females take blood meals, using piercing mouthparts; both sexes feed mainly on plant nectar. The blood meal supports egg production.

Adults are most active around dawn, dusk, or at night, though some species bite during the day. The raised, itchy redness is a delayed immune reaction to saliva, not usually the insect itself remaining in the skin.

Bites can cause itching, swelling, allergic reactions, and occasionally transmit diseases such as West Nile, dengue, or malaria, depending on region. Mosquitoes also pollinate plants and serve as prey for fish, birds, bats, and other insects.
