Bird Lice (Louse) / Mite

Typically found on domestic and wild birds, poultry houses, nests, and occasionally indoors near bird nesting sites.

They feed on blood (hematophagous) or skin debris, feathers, and scales depending on the specific species.

Many are nocturnal, hiding in cracks during the day and emerging to feed at night. They can survive for long periods without a host. They often enter homes if a bird nest is abandoned or removed.

Risks include skin irritation (dermatitis), itching, and secondary infections in humans. They do not live on humans permanently but can cause painful bites. They are pests for the poultry industry.
