Jerusalem cricket (likely)

Dry, sandy or rocky soils, often beneath rocks, logs, leaf litter, or garden debris in the western United States and Mexico.

Mostly feeds on roots, tubers, decaying plant material, and occasionally small invertebrates. It is not venomous and does not suck blood.

Primarily nocturnal and spends much of its life underground, excavating with its enlarged head and jaws. It may drum or hiss when disturbed and can emit a painful defensive bite.

Generally harmless to people, though handling can provoke a bite. It helps recycle organic matter and aerate soil; occasional individuals may damage roots or seedlings.
