Natural Habitat

Moist, humid environments, commonly found indoors near houseplants, in greenhouses, mushroom farms, and anywhere there's consistently damp soil or rotting organic material.

Diet & Feeding

Larvae primarily feed on fungi, decaying organic matter, and sometimes plant roots. Adult fungus gnats do not feed.

Behavior Patterns

Fungus gnats are attracted to moist environments, particularly decaying organic matter or overly wet soil. Adults are weak fliers and often seen near potted plants. Larvae feed on fungi and decaying plant material in the soil.

Risks & Benefits

Generally considered a nuisance pest, but large infestations can cause damage to seedling and young plant roots. They do not bite humans or transmit diseases. Their larvae help in breaking down organic matter in soil.
