Ground beetle

Found on or under soil, leaf litter, stones, logs, and garden debris; many enter buildings accidentally while dispersing.

Mostly predatory, eating caterpillars, beetle larvae, slugs, snails, and other small invertebrates; some species also consume seeds or plant matter.

Generally nocturnal and fast-running, hiding by day. Adults overwinter in soil or sheltered spaces, while larvae develop in soil, leaf litter, or rotten wood.

Harmless to people and not a structural pest. It is beneficial in gardens and agriculture because it suppresses many insect and slug pests.
