Nocturnal insects that hide during the day and use their characteristic rear pincers (cerci) for defense, mating displays, and capturing prey.

Generally harmless to humans; they do not sting and are rarely known to pinch with enough force to break skin, though they can be minor garden pests or household nuisances.
