Small dark ground beetle (likely a carabid)

Usually found under stones, leaf litter, logs, and mulch, or entering buildings accidentally from gardens and soil.

Most adults are predatory, feeding on caterpillars, insect larvae, mites, and other small invertebrates; some species also eat seeds or plant matter.

Generally nocturnal and fast-running, hiding during daylight. They do not reproduce indoors and commonly seek shelter in cracks or beneath objects.

Harmless to people, pets, clothing, and stored food; they do not bite or infest structures. Beneficial species help suppress many garden pests.
