Violet-backed lappet moth caterpillar (likely)

Woodlands, forest edges, gardens, and other areas with host plants across eastern North America.

Larvae chew leaves of many trees and shrubs, including willow, oak, maple, and cherry. Adults generally do not feed, living off stored larval energy.

Solitary or loosely grouped leaf-feeders that may rest along stems and foliage; they pupate in silken cocoons or leaf litter. The caterpillar’s bright eyespots and defensive spines deter predators.

The urticating spines can cause painful burning, rash, or eye irritation; avoid handling. It is a native herbivore and prey species, supporting woodland food webs.
