Crane Fly

Found in damp environments, near wetlands, grasslands, and frequently attracted to porch lights near homes.

Adults typically feed on nectar, flower fluids, or do not feed at all; larvae (leatherjackets) feed on plant roots and decaying organic matter in the soil.

Often fly clumsily and are attracted to lights at night; larvae live underground and can be active pests of turfgrass and lawns.

Completely harmless to humans—they do not bite or transmit diseases. Larvae can occasionally damage agricultural crops or turfgrass.
