Whirligig beetle

Freshwater ponds, lakes, slow streams, and temporary pools; adults usually live on the water surface.

Adults and larvae are predatory, eating small aquatic insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates; adults may also scavenge.

Adults often circle rapidly in groups using divided eyes to see above and below the surface. They dive when disturbed, using an air bubble carried beneath the body; larvae develop underwater.

Harmless to people and not a household pest. It helps regulate aquatic invertebrates and serves as prey for fish, birds, and other predators.
