Velvet mite (likely red velvet mite)

Found in soil, leaf litter, moss, gardens, and occasionally on indoor floors or wood after being carried indoors. They favor humid conditions and often emerge after rain.

Adults commonly prey on tiny arthropods and their eggs, while larvae may parasitize insects and other arthropods. They do not feed on wood or household materials.

Bright red, densely hairy, and slow-moving; adults are generally solitary hunters. They are most active in damp weather and spend much of their life in soil or litter.

Harmless to people, pets, clothing, and buildings; they do not bite or infest homes. They benefit ecosystems by consuming small invertebrates, though some related trombidiid larvae can parasitize insects.
