Grasslands, gardens, crop edges, and areas beneath stones or plant debris; commonly enters buildings at night.

Primarily omnivorous, eating grasses, seeds, decaying plant matter, fungi, and small insects or carrion.

Mostly nocturnal and ground-dwelling; males produce characteristic chirping calls by rubbing their wings together. Females lay eggs in soil, and juveniles resemble wingless adults.
