Larvae and adults feed mainly on grains, bran, flour, and decaying plant matter; larvae are commonly raised as animal feed.

Mostly nocturnal and secretive. Females lay eggs in stored food, and development proceeds through larva, pupa, and adult stages; adults may fly when disturbed or attracted to light.

Generally harmless to people and non-venomous, though infestations contaminate stored foods. Larvae are ecologically important decomposers and a widely used food source for birds, reptiles, and fish.
