Carpenter Ant

Found in both forested and suburban areas; they build nests in damp, decaying wood, tree trunks, and sometimes within the structural timber of buildings.

Omnivorous; they feed on honeydew from aphids, plant juices, and other insects. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood but merely excavate it to build nests.

Highly social insects with a caste system including workers, soldiers, and a queen. They follow chemical scent trails and are most active at night.

Benefits include ecosystem services like seed dispersal and aerating soil. Risks include significant structural damage to homes if nests are established in building foundations or framing.
