Ground beetle (likely a black carabid)

Usually found beneath logs, stones, leaf litter, and bark, but may wander indoors, especially near doors and damp areas.

Mostly predatory, eating caterpillars, beetle larvae, slugs, snails, and other small invertebrates; some species also consume seeds or plant material.

Primarily nocturnal and fast-running, using speed rather than flight to escape. Adults commonly overwinter in sheltered sites; many species release defensive odors or irritants when handled.

Generally harmless to people and do not infest structures or stored food. Beneficial predators that help suppress garden and household insect pests.
