Blue death-feigning beetle

Arid regions and deserts of Southwestern United States (Mojave and Sonoran deserts) and Northern Mexico

Scavenger feeding on dead insects, decaying plant matter, fruits, and organic detritus

Flightless and slow-moving. Known for feigning death (death-feigning or tonic immobility) by rolling onto its back with legs stiffened in the air when threatened or disturbed. Produces a powdery blue wax coating to prevent moisture loss in dry environments.

Harmless to humans with no bite or sting. Ecosystem benefit as a decomposer that recycles organic waste in desert ecosystems; popular as a low-maintenance pet.
