Broad-necked Root Borer Beetle

Deciduous forests, orchards, and suburban areas near hardwood trees like oak, chestnut, and fruit trees.

Larvae feed internally on the roots of trees and shrubs; adults generally do not feed or feed minimally on sap and foliage.

Adults are nocturnal and often attracted to outdoor lights during summer months. Females lay eggs near the base of host trees. The larval stage lasts 3-5 years underground inside roots before pupating.

Risks: The larvae can cause significant damage or death to host trees and fruit crops by girdling roots. Benefits: They contribute to nutrient cycling in natural forest ecosystems by breaking down wood and roots.
