Open woodland, heathland, grassland, gardens, and urban areas, especially where bedstraw or willowherb grows. Adults often rest camouflaged on bark, soil, or vegetation.

Adults feed on nectar from tubular flowers, often hovering like hummingbirds. Caterpillars eat bedstraws and related plants, sometimes willowherb.

Primarily crepuscular or nocturnal; strong, rapid fliers attracted to fragrant flowers and lights. Caterpillars develop through summer, then pupate in leaf litter or soil and overwinter as pupae.

Harmless to people and does not sting or bite. Adults are important nighttime pollinators, while caterpillars contribute to food webs; larvae may occasionally defoliate host plants.
