European garden spider (cross orb-weaver)

Gardens, hedges, woodland edges, and other places with vegetation suitable for orb webs; commonly found around buildings.

Catches and eats flying insects, including flies, mosquitoes, and moths, in its web.

Builds a large, circular web and often rests at its center or nearby, sensing vibrations. Adults are most noticeable in late summer and autumn.

Harmless to people; bites are rare and usually mild. It helps control insect populations.
