Diet & Feeding

Obligate ectoparasite that feeds exclusively on human blood several times a day

Behavior Patterns

They are wingless and cannot jump or fly; they crawl from hair to hair via direct contact. Eggs (nits) are glued to the base of hair shafts.

Risks & Benefits

Cause intense itching and scalp irritation; they are a nuisance but are not known to spread diseases. No known ecosystem benefits.
