Likely chigger (harvest mite larva)
Trombiculidae, commonly *Trombicula* or *Neotrombicula* species
- Order & Family
- Trombidiformes; family Trombiculidae
- Size
- About 0.15–0.3 mm as larvae; usually barely visible without magnification.
Natural Habitat
Leaf litter, grassy areas, brush, and soil, especially in warm, humid conditions. Larvae attach temporarily to passing humans and animals.
Diet & Feeding
Larvae feed on liquefied skin tissue and lymph after attaching; they do not drink blood. Nymphs and adults typically prey on tiny arthropods or feed on organic material.
Behavior Patterns
Larvae cluster on vegetation and attach to hosts, often causing intensely itchy bites several hours later. They usually detach after feeding for several days; the image alone cannot confirm species.
Risks & Benefits
May cause itchy red welts and dermatitis; some Asian species can transmit scrub typhus. Free-living stages help regulate small invertebrates and contribute to decomposition.
