Rove beetle (likely a Paederus-type beetle)

Moist soil, leaf litter, vegetation, and cracks near waterways or buildings; often active on humid nights and attracted to lights.

Adults and larvae prey on small insects, mites, and other soft-bodied arthropods, contributing to natural pest control.

Recognized by short wing covers that leave much of the abdomen exposed. They are fast-moving, often nocturnal, and may raise the abdomen when disturbed; crushed individuals can release irritating toxins.

Some Paederus species cause dermatitis if crushed against skin, producing burning, redness, or blistering; wash exposed skin promptly with soap and water. They are beneficial predators in agricultural and garden ecosystems.
