Nests occur under eaves, porch ceilings, sheds, and other sheltered structures, especially in warm temperate regions.

Adults consume nectar and other sugary fluids. They capture and chew caterpillars and other insects to feed their larvae.

Paper wasps build open, umbrella-like combs from chewed wood fibers mixed with saliva; the visible cells contain developing larvae or pupae. Colonies are usually annual, with queens overwintering and workers defending the nest later in the season.

They can deliver painful stings, particularly if the nest is disturbed, and may sting repeatedly. They are beneficial predators of caterpillars and other garden pests; the pictured nest appears inactive or removed.
