Woolly Bear Caterpillar

Found in temperate regions across North America, inhabiting fields, meadows, gardens, and forests.

Generalist herbivore consuming leaves of herbaceous plants, grasses, dandelions, and clover.

Curls into a tight ball when threatened and overwinters as a caterpillar beneath leaf litter, freezing solid before pupating in spring.

Harmless to humans with no stinging capability, while serving as an important food source for birds and small mammals.
