Annual cicada

Trees and shrubs in wooded areas, gardens, and parks; nymphs live underground near tree roots.

Nymphs and adults suck xylem sap from plants using piercing-sucking mouthparts.

Adults are strong fliers; males produce loud calls to attract mates. Nymphs spend years underground before emerging and molting into adults.

Harmless to people and pets; occasional heavy emergence can stress young trees, while cicadas provide food for wildlife and enrich soil after dying.
