Inchworm (Geometer moth caterpillar)

Found globally in forests, gardens, and urban areas on various host plants including trees and shrubs.

Most species are herbivorous, feeding on the leaves of their host plants; some species can be generalist feeders.

Known for their distinctive looping gait caused by having prolegs at only the front and back ends. Many species exhibit mimicry, standing stiffly to resemble a twig when threatened.

While they can be agricultural or garden pests in large numbers, they are a vital food source for birds and other wildlife, and many species are important pollinators as adults (moths).
