Ground beetle (likely a bombardier beetle)

Usually found beneath stones, leaf litter, logs, and debris in temperate terrestrial habitats; sometimes enters buildings accidentally.

Predatory, feeding mainly on small insects, larvae, and other arthropods; some ground beetles also consume seeds or plant matter.

Mostly nocturnal and fast-running, with adults hiding during daylight. Bombardier beetles eject a hot, irritating chemical spray when threatened; adults overwinter and reproduce in soil or litter.

Not dangerous to people, though defensive spray can irritate skin or eyes. Beneficial predators that help suppress insect populations; they do not damage structures.
