Eastern Hercules Beetle

Hardwood and mixed forests in the eastern United States, often found near decaying logs and tree stumps

Adults feed on tree sap, rotting fruit, and nectar. Larvae (grubs) feed on decaying wood within dead trees and logs.

Nocturnal insects attracted to bright outdoor lights. Males possess large horns used to joust with rivals for females. They can produce a foul-smelling odor when threatened.

Harmless to humans as they do not bite or sting. Highly beneficial decomposers that help break down rotting wood and return nutrients back to forest soil.
