Common dragonfly

Near freshwater sources such as ponds, lakes, rivers, and marshes; often seen flying over open fields or during migrations.

Carnivorous; adults hunt on the wing and eat mosquitoes, gnats, flies, and other small flying insects.

Active during the day (diurnal), highly maneuverable flyers capable of hovering and flying backwards. Some species form large swarms for migration or feeding.

Highly beneficial to humans as they provide natural pest control by consuming large quantities of mosquitoes and flies. They are generally harmless to humans.
