Orb-weaver spider

Gardens, woodland edges, shrubs, and buildings where sturdy supports allow construction of orb webs. Most are nocturnal or crepuscular.

Carnivorous, capturing flies, moths, mosquitoes, and other small arthropods in sticky orb webs. Prey is immobilized with silk and externally digested.

Builds or repairs a circular, radiating web, often replacing it regularly. It detects trapped prey through web vibrations and may retreat nearby during daylight.

Generally harmless to humans; bites are uncommon and usually cause mild, localized symptoms. Beneficial predators that reduce flying-insect populations.
